Somerset duo crowned International Band of the Year at global music awards.

 

A Somerset band has secured one of the biggest achievements of their career after being named International Band of the Year 2026 by the International Singer-Songwriters Association (ISSA), beating competition from independent artists across the world.

 

The award marks another major milestone for Rileys Cove, the Somerset acoustic duo made up of vocalist Michelle Mitchell and guitarist Ian Scott, better known as Chelle & Scottie, who first gained international recognition after winning an ISSA award for their debut single 'Without' during the pandemic.

 

Their latest success follows the release of their newest EP, Listen Carefully, which launched in March 2026 and features five original tracks showcasing the band's distinctive blend of acoustic, folk and country-inspired songwriting.The International Singer-Songwriters Association is one of the world's largest independent music communities, supporting and promoting artists across multiple countries.

 

The award was announced at the ISSA's annual red-carpet awards ceremony, which celebrates excellence in independent music and is held at the prestigious Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center in Atlanta, Georgia, a venue also used for the BMI Awards.

 

Scottie said: "We've come a long way since we started writing together over socially distanced garden jams and video calls back in 2020. Six years on we've written and recorded 13 original tracks on three EP's, and been lucky enough to play some amazing gigs, including Glastonbury Festival in 2023. To now be recognised internationally is something we're enormously proud of."

 

Chelle said "To be awarded International Band of the Year feels completely surreal. As a small independent band from a tiny corner of rural Somerset, we could never imagine standing alongside incredible artists from across the world and receiving this kind of recognition. "

 

The award comes after a strong year for the duo, whose music continues to attract listeners in the UK, Europe, North America and Australia. Their latest EP, Listen Carefully, has received praise for its heartfelt songwriting and authentic Somerset sound.Scottie said ''It feels incredibly special, like recognition for our entire journey and everything we've created together. It is a movement Scottie knows well through his work as co-owner of The Bluebird Café in Wedmore, an intimate live music venue that champions emerging and independent artists from across the UK and beyond.Scottie said: "The Bluebird is all about giving talented musicians a platform and creating a space where people can discover something new. We've welcomed some incredible artists through the doors over the years, spanning every genre imaginable. One week you might see a country singer-songwriter, the next a jazz trio or folk band. Independent music is thriving, and venues like The Bluebird play an important role in helping independent artists like us, connect with audiences.

The duo recorded the EP at BeeHive Studios in Westonzoyland and say the recognition has given them fresh motivation to continue writing and performing.Rileys Cove now hope to build on the momentum created by both the EP and their latest international success, with plans to continue writing new material and performing across the region.Their award-winning EP Listen Carefully is available now on Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music and other major streaming platforms.
